I'm finishing up the fourth chapter of James in my sermon this Sunday. I've really enjoyed preaching through James, and have seen many important issues work through the life of my church.
The main commentary I've been using is the Pillar New Testament Commentary on James by Douglas Moo (who is obviously the long, lost twin brother of Stephen King with different writing goals).
I've also been using other commentaries. Kent Hughes, Thomas Manton, Peter Davids, and the New Bible Commentary among others. But none of them are as good as Moo. I'm very happy with it and encourage you to pick it up if you need a fairly critical commentary on James.
Moo is one of the best.
He is also a very good teacher (I had him for many classes while I studied at Trinity Evang. Divinity School). He also is a fine, humble, loving Christian man.
I was glad to see his writing the Pillar commentary on James. He had written the Tyndale commentary (IVP), but the format of that series was too limiting due to space alloted.
Be sure to check out his most excellent work: The NICNT commentary on Romans. Simply a "gotta have it!" (BTW, he wrote the Romans section in the New Bible Commentary).

I have him on Romans Bob.
I studied under Tom Schreiner at SBTS in Louisville, and he has written an excellent commentary on Romans as well (BECNT). I remember telling him once at church that I bought Moo's commentary and he said, "Don't you have mine?" I said, "Of course." He responded, "Then why did you buy Moo?" Then of course he laughed. Good guy who knows his place.

I have a LOT of Romans commentaries--But I've been meaning to get Schreiner's.
I just love talking commentaries. They are one of my vices--I am one of those guys that hords information, and my shelves are filled with these things.

I love talking books in general, commentaries also. I have a feeling we have a lot in common Bob.
