Michael Spencer (the iMonk) has added his well-reasoned and biblical take on the SBTS Alcohol and Ministry Forum, which has been the topic of much discussion on Reformissionary.

Very strong, articlate appeal for reform. I hope the SBC authorities will consider the thoughtful arguments and discussion.
I've spent the last 17 years in a great charismatic church. I still get the hee-bees, however, whenever I drop by the local liquor store. I feel like I'm being watched by big brother or something. And for the record...I'm positive it's not the convicting power of the Holy Spirit! I'd love to know how many of my brothers and sisters wrestle with the same guilt and shame based solely on superimposed, extra-biblical expectations.
I agree that the error being discussed is important ONLY to the extent that it lies in direct opposition to to sufficiency of Christ. What can we add to the empowering accomplishment of the cross, which gives each man sufficient grace to walk in pure conscience through all of the difficult implications of enjoyment, moderation, and abstinence.

It is interesting that the Abstract of Principles (the confessional document of Southern Seminary) mentions "wine" as part of communion. I wonder what these guys would think about wine in communion.
