Yes, the rumor is true. Okay, there's no rumor, but there should be one now that Joe Thorn has "unintentionally" deleted folders containing his blog posts.
Since he was doing a series on the seven deadly sins, and his most recent one was "envy," it's clear that God deleted his blog because Joe envied my blog. Shame on you Joe.
In partial seriousness, Joe should have his blog up and running again in the next five to forty-five days, or something like that.
It will only take 45 days if I go on the Warren/Osteen Oceanic Cruise Retreat, "40 Days of..." something. I forget.
Anyway, if this is all I get in the form of judgment for my sins - God is truly merciful (unlike Steve).

This is only "phase one" Joe. Next phase is you are forced to give me all your books. :)

That explains the white page. Thought it was me. Sorry Joe.

What happened?
Posted by: David Wright | 12/01/2005 at 06:29 PM
I feel so guilty. The last thing I put on Joe's blog was an accusation that he and Steve are emergent hippies. Now I wonder: will I ever get to tell the blog how much I really care?
Posted by: David Wright | 12/01/2005 at 06:31 PM
Maybe the new blog will be Tabula Rosa, or would that be the current one? Steve, it's a shame you couldn't get RR's "Who's Joe Thorn" audio track on that picture...that would be awesome.

And I thought I had been white-listed from Joe's blog - blocked from making infrequent non-comments. I'm glad it wasn't my connection ......

ahhh. I thought he had perma banned me for my pictorial roast of emerging on PURGATORIO
Posted by: marc | 12/01/2005 at 09:50 PM
Yeesh, that had to suck!
I always liked Joe's site, hopefully he'll be able to get all the graphics and such back again.
Posted by: Marcguyver | 12/02/2005 at 12:46 AM
Maybe he'll bring back the pic of him doing his Mr. Clean impersonation...

I am off to Chicago for the day with the family, so nothing will be accomplished online today/this weekend. I still have my custom WP theme, and all the images I used for my posts (not that they do me any good now).
The blog will be back at the latest Jan. 1 06.
I may just hijack Steve comments and use them as my own personal blog until then. He might not even notice with all the wack-jobs who comment here. ;)

Does Joe know that his host probably has a backup of all his files? I lost mine once, fretted over it for awhile, but then contacted my host and they restored everything. It's worth an email or phone call.
Would resetting your computer to a pre-deletion date restore the files?
Posted by: Mike | 12/02/2005 at 07:02 AM
Mike,
Yeah the host can get it all back - for $150. I'll pass on that one. Moving the calendar back on my comp. won't do anything since the files were all hosted online. There is no retrieving them on my end.
I'm over it now. It's still annoying, but how can I really get bent out of shae about it? Oh, poor me. I lost the words I wrote on a blog. Man, the Sudanese have it so much better.
Next time I'll have everything backed up on my hd. If I had been sing Ecto like Cawley suggested this would have been an easy fix.

Joe, losing what you've written would be a shame. Did the MySQL database get corrupted (or lost)? Does it still exist? I've got some skills(z). I might be able to help . . .
Also, I can recommentd an affordable Christian host that might be more cooperative should such a thing ever occur again.

...set up a paypal acct and ask for donations from your readership... you should be able to get enough donations to get your data back in no time... the rest of the $$ that goes "over" what you need to raise could go to help re-baptize all the people who want to go on the mission field... or some other charitable dealie.

I was able to retrieve over 160 of Joe's blog posts (including comments) from google's cache with a perl script. I have zipped them up and sent them to him in an e-mail. Hopefully this will allow most of the old blog to be reconstructed.

I had a guy call me at work once requesting help for his computer (I am a System Admin). Instead of following my instructions, he decided to ignore me and delete c:\windows.
He was from South Carolina. Do you have any kin there?
Posted by: Ryan DeBarr | 12/02/2005 at 01:31 PM
Wow David. You deserve this.
Posted by: Steve McCoy | 12/02/2005 at 01:33 PM
Steve,
I'm delayed at getting back to your tomfoolery about picking on folks who teach and preach, but maybe my blog's picture of when I was sitting in the back pew may ring a bell!
Posted by: Scot McKnight | 12/02/2005 at 01:52 PM
Steve, could I have this instead?
Posted by: David Wright | 12/02/2005 at 02:11 PM
Scot, you forget that I can take your pick and "doctor" it however I like. ;) Actually, we only have a couple of sleepers at my church. And they are at least awake part of the time.

Joe, I would seriously consider letting your readers (that means us) chip in a few bucks each to get the whole thing back as it was... and without your killing yourself over the holidays. Let it be a present from us to you and your family. I would rather imagine you pouring 20 hours into writing new pieces than reassembling old stuff a post at a time.

Anyone know how to organize that other than just sending Joe something in the snailmail? This isn't my cup of tea.
Posted by: Steve McCoy | 12/03/2005 at 08:57 AM
I was about to suggest looking at google cache and then I see someone's written a script to do it!
Script the world, wahoo. :)
Posted by: Nick P. | 12/04/2005 at 12:30 AM
Well, I think it's pretty easy to set up an Amazon tipping thingie.
Or, if Joe has Paypal . . .
Posted by: David Wright | 12/04/2005 at 07:51 PM
Guys,
You are all very kind, and it has been an encouragement to me to hear that people would miss the blog. David, thanks for finding my posts in the google cache.
I have been able to recover my posts (all of them I believe), and the blog is back up and running. I have a few things I still need to fix, but it is back.
Instead of taking up a collection for my blog, I say we all pool our money and buy Steve a Christmas present. I know exactly what he wants. :)
Posted by: Joe Thorn | 12/05/2005 at 09:59 AM
woohoo! Great news Joe.
