I've talked my fair share on the topic of alcohol, legalism, etc (see here, here, and here). Here's a new Derek Webb song that speaks to the topic of legalism. If you haven't heard Webb's new CD, Mockingbird, I encourage you to get it. It's very good.
"A New Law"
don’t teach me about politics and government
just tell me who to vote for
don’t teach me about truth and beauty
just label my musicdon’t teach me how to live like a free man
just give me a new lawi don’t wanna know if the answers aren’t easy
so just bring it down from the mountain to mei want a new law
i want a new law
just gimme that new lawdon’t teach me about moderation and liberty
i prefer a shot of grape juicedon’t teach me about loving my enemies
don’t teach me how to listen to the Spirit
just give me a new lawi don’t wanna know if the answers aren’t easy
so just bring it down from the mountain to mei want a new law
i want a new law
just gimme that new lawcause what’s the use in trading a law you can never keep
for one you can that cannot get you anything
do not be afraid
do not be afraid
do not be afraid
do not be afraid
oh, do not be afraid
do not be afraid
do not be afraid
do not be afraid
oh, do not be afraid
do not be afraid
do not be afraid
do not be afraid
oh, do not be afraid
do not be afraid
do not be afraidoh, do not be afraid
Steve, thanks for highlighting this album. I just downloaded it off iTunes - it's excellent.

We had Derek Webb for a concert at the college where I teach this past semester. It was an excellent, gospel-centered 2 hours. This is one of the songs he sang. Slipping into that kind of legalistic thinking is so easy. My default mode is to want this new law of which Derek's song speaks. So what I need is to be reminded of the gospel again and again and again. We don't need a new law. We need the very power of God, namely, the gospel.
