I've started a new habit. Every week I spend most of my time on sermon prep on Friday and Saturday. On Saturday evening, when my preparations are done, I'm reading for an hour on the Gospel, the Cross, or the life and work of Jesus. I find as I finish my preparation it really helps me to focus on the point of every biblical passage, the Gospel.
I'm starting by rereading John Stott's The Cross of Christ, which I read in seminary and loved.
Steve -
this is beside my bed right now. i started reading about the atonement in there. I'm supposed to read it for Theology, but I doubt I'll get to it. I keep thinking that after seminary I'll be able to go back and read all the books I didn't get to read or didn't get to read well.
I think my 'position paper' for Dr. Ware is going to be on substitutionary atonement, so I'll probably at least be reading relevant chapters from Stott.

That seems like a really cool idea Steve. Thanks for sharing it with us.

I am actually doing the same, trying to spend at least 15 minutes reading Stott's book before I go to bed.

Steve,
if you get a chance check out the last 15 minutes or so of Art Azurdia's 1st message on Nehemiah in which he speaks of 3 main things he hopes to clearly unfold as he and his friends go through the book:
1. An appreciation for the whole of scripture
2. To learn about God ("Theology proper is not [merely] a discipline for the classroom but an elixer for the Christian life"!)
3. To see Jesus Christ in this book. He goes off!
I linked his sermons on my blog.
blessings
Danny
