Steve--
i've never posted on your site, but i've followed it for several months. i don't want to bore anybody with my "bio," so i'll just say that i generally agree with what you (and your band of outlaws) have to say, and even when i don't, i sincerely appreciate what you do with this site. i'm a singer-songwriter and worship leader by trade, but i'm also a recovering cynic. your site is a consistent source of encouragment and thought-provocation to me.
enough of that. this particular link worked me up enough that i finally decided to post.
i just wanted to say that i was a little disappointed with erwin's answers in this interview. i'm generally a fan of what he writes, and i've had the blessing of hearing him speak at a couple of emergent-type things, but i just felt like his answers all read like slogans and soundbites. is this the way that he really talks? one of the things that i love about what's happening in pseudo-baptist-pseudo-intellectual-not-quite-charismatic-but-probably-calvinist-plus-i-like-beer-but-don't-call-me-emergent-because-no-one-konws-what-that-means movement/conversation/milieu is that people are encouraged to be honest and vulnerable and authentic. it seems like people are becoming more and more irritated with sales pitches and rehearsed speeches and impersonal responses. i don't know. i'm not saying that i'm now against this guy based on one interview (and of course i'm aware that people can be mis-quoted in interviews). i'm just saying that if i heard lots of statements (some of them very poorly constructed for a guy who writes books for a living) that didn't make much sense in any context but greeting-card world.
i know i'm taking a risk with this as my first post, but there you go. i like this guy, i promise. i just didn't like this interview.
and before anybody jumps on me, please note that i had the nards to use the word "milieu" in context. that's gotta count for something.

oops. there's an "if" in a sentence that doesn't belong. it's a little ironic, i guess, considering i made fun of the construction of his sentences. anyway, i'm done. thanks again for the cool site, Steve.
keep it up.

Ross,
I found it frustrating, too. Maybe I just expected more from someone whose preaching and books are usually inspiring to me. But how frustrating that a published interview reveals less about a man than the FAQs on his website.
ps "In Need" is one of my favorite worship songs and still (what, 12 years later?) enjoys heavy rotation in my cd player.

did his answers sound smug and arrogant? I suppose a typed interview cannot "sound" like anything per se: but I could not help but see him smirking as he answered these questions. his book "chasing daylight" was one of the more inspiring books i've read recently; i'd be rather disappointed if this interview is an accurate reflection of his demeanor.
