I received the new edition of Wired in the mail today. The lead article is called "The Church of the Non-Believers" on what they call "the new atheism." Much is focused on Richard Dawkins (Mohler commented on Dawkins yesterday). It's a thought-provoking article.
Don't miss the "Faces of the New Atheism," including a few paragraphs on Penn and Teller.
Steve,
Doug Groothuis points to a NY times article -Beyond Belief
By JIM HOLT
Published: October 22, 2006
Doug notes -
Holt does not exactly defend theism, but he lets some of the air out of Dawkins's overinflated tires, noting that Dawkins's treatment of the arguments for God's existence does not do justice to the philosophical sophistication involved. And so on. Given that Dawkins is one of the leading anti-theistic intellectuals of our time, this is heartening, especially given the source.
One needs to subscribe to read the NY Times piece. I printed it yesterday but today the site is calling for login information.
I like you read the piece and found it a necessary read.

I just read this in my aggregator yesterday. I think it is pretty clear that atheists are reacting to both Islamic terrorists and the Religious Right. I cannot say that I blame them for being afraid and disrespectful of people of faith the way we have been coming across the last few years.

I would personally like to apologize for the way Marc comes across. ;)

The New Atheism looks like the old Atheism.

agreed, the wired issue is pretty interesting.
fyi - one of the best critiques that i've read of dawkins new book is in the November issue of Harpers by Marilyn Robinson, author of the wonderful Gilead. While Robinson is a fairly open person of faith she's writing a literary review/critique in this piece and along the way she pretty handily punches holes in not only what dawkins says but how he says it. worth a read for those interested. the harpers website hasn't been updated with the november issue yet and even then they don't post all the articles but its only a couple pages so you could read it standing at the newstand.

Jon, I hadn't seen Colbert with Dawkins yet. That was awesome. Thanks man. Feel free to "double post" good stuff as much as you like. :)
