I don't have kids yet, but I read "How to Talk so Kids Will Listen, and Listen so Kids Will Talk" by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish two years ago, just for fun, and it really changed the way I thought about communicating with children, and adults for that matter. Extremely helpful.

Reading parenting books has turned into a hobby of mine with the hopes that some of the advice will actually stick. I feel a measure of success when my 3 are still alive at the end of the day. In order to make Steve happy here is one that Tim Keller recommends: :)

Shepherding a Child's Heart - Ted Tripp

Here are two more from Keller's website. These are for parenting older kids (I have not read them yet)
Age of Opportunity - Paul David Tripp
Parenting without Perfection - David J. Seel

Something else will come to me later... but I need to mention Jim Hancock's RAISING ADULTS. It's OOP and isn't "spiritual" enough for a lot of folks, but I've found that it does a great job of helping parents of adolescents begin the ugly/important process of unpacking their own junk (in light of the grace of Jesus) so they don't hand it down to their kids.

Letters to Children, C.S. Lewis
Even though he had no children of his own, Lewis's letters gave me a wonderful example of helping and instructing kids. His letter to a boy who loves Aslan more than Jesus really stands out in my mind.

1. Shepherding a Child's Heart by Tripp
2. How Children Raise Parents by Allender
3. Baby Wise (it was great for the first year of their lives)
Haven't read these, but plan to:
4. Instructing a Child's Heart by Tripp

My list...
Shepherding a Child's Heart - Tripp
Growing Kids God's Way - Ezzo (We saw the video curriculum as fairly young Christians and before having children. While I think GKGW has some significant flaws, it influenced us in profound ways for which we are very grateful.)
Future Men - Wilson
Disciplines of a Godly Family - Hughes
Family Worship - Whitney

Although I've just gotten started at parenting, and my wife does a much better job of it than I do, I'd say that the book of Proverbs from the bible has most of what a parent should teach a child. Ecclesiastes too. And the scattered admonitions and instructions around the New and Old Testaments form the other important areas for general and specific guidance.

Instructing... by Tripps

Although definitely not a parenting "how-to" book, Let Us Highly Resolve, by David and Shirley Quine, is a great vision casting resource for determining your family’s mission.
