I'm starting a sermon series through 1 Peter this Sunday at Doxa Fellowship. These are the commentaries I'm using. Some will be read in full, others referenced or skimmed. I starred the ones I expect to use most. Feel free to suggest other resources you think would be helpful.
- 1 Peter (BECNT) - Jobes*
- 1,2 Peter, Jude (NAC) - Schreiner*
- 1 Peter (NIV Application Commentary) - McKnight*
- The Message of 1 Peter (Bible Speaks Today) - Clowney*
- The First Epistle of Peter (NICNT) - Davids
- 1 Peter (Word) Michaels
- The Epistles of Peter and of Jude (Black's) - Kelly
- Also: New Bible Commentary, Calvin, Gill, Hendrickson
Jobes was my favorite when we taught 1 Peter earlier this year at The Journey. She's sound, contextual and it's great to have a woman's perspective on chapter 3.
As Eric Mason told me, "Jobes is a beast, man. She's a beast." I think that's good.

I know it is from a critical perspective (you have some good evangelical works to temper a critical commenary), but Achtemeier's Hermeneia commentary on 1st Peter is spectacular, if not the best commentary on 1st Peter. In fact, I heard Dr. Brian Vickers of SBTS say that it is the best NT commentary on any book in the NT. Check it out and profit.

I have heard wonderful things about Grudem's 1 Peter in the TNTC series. You may want to give that a shot.

Echo the call for Grudem's commentary, especially for his appendix on 3:19-20 (one of the most difficulat passages in all of Scripture).

I'm also in the middle of a I Peter series, and love the Jobes and Schreiner commentaries. McKnight gets an occasional glance, and Clowney is good for a more devotional, old school perspective. Agree with the other comments, you might want to pick up Grudem's as well.
When I saw this post I thought I was looking at my own blog for a second because I've been meaning to post something really similar. :)

Achtemeier's Hermeneia - Agreed it is the best

I recommend an older commentary. An Obedient and Patient Faith: An Exposition of 1st Peter by Robert Leighton has some great pastoral material. Fetchbook.com has a best price of $12.74 including shipping.

It was interesting how often Schreiner disagreed with Grudem, primarily because of different views regarding perseverance and warning passages.

If you're making forays into the Greek of 1 Peter (which is fairly heady stuff - I reckon Silvanus (1 Pet 5:12) earned his corn on this one!), then you could do worse than consult these two worthies:
- J.H.A. Hart in The Expositor's Greek Testament, vol. 5; and
- Charles Bigg's ICC Volume.
Their exegetical reflections might even be stimulating. ;)

Jobes distills Grudem's thoughts on 3:19-20 in her portion on that.

I'd say Joel Green's is quite simply the most comprehensive.
