...a $139 Kindle 6" Wi-Fi. Excited to get it and was able to pick it up with Amazon gift cards. Sweet. Any advice from current owners? Tips? Twitter accounts about Kindle I should follow?

I love mine. The only problem is that it's been too easy to buy books - and then Imbi sees the Visa bill @ the end of the month.
I bought the Kindle case with built in light and love it.

Books schmooks. Use it with Instapaper.com and Long Reads to read long form journalism and other content from the web on a regular basis, and on a device where you can't give in to the temptation to check twitter or facebook or whatever other timesuck is killing your productivity that day. Surf the net, save things to read later, and then voila, no more 30 tabs open at once with "that New Yorker piece I've been meaning to read for the last 3 weeks."

I love underlining stuff and being able to go online and see it all in one place. Awesome for going back to find stuff.

D. Easler, thanks for the links. Will check'm out.
Dan, I still need to figure out how handy that is. But that is definitely one thing I was excited about.
Bill, I still love paper enough I don't think I'll go overboard, but I hear you. :)

Why didnt you get an iPad?

JD, 1. E ink. I want something like paper. 2. Cost. 3. Dedicated reader = less distraction.

Highlights are your friend, especially being able to tweet and Facebook post highlighted sections/quotes. Unfortunately there is a character limit. I'm not sure if it is set by the publisher or not. but a nice feature regardless. ( http://amzn.com/k/3O3N1V1AESYPH )
That and load that puppy up with whatever music you're into this week. alt+space to get er started. that is if you enjoy music while you read.
If you have a smartphone, or the desktop kindle app, they will sync to you're last read page so you can continue reading.
Enjoy :)

I'm a long time Kindle user, now on my second kindle, which is why I give you this advice:
Be careful with the screen. My wife stepped on mine while she was making the bed and it broke the screen. Once it's broken, there is no fixing it. It's basically an electronic etch-a-sketch. I've heard that it can get messed up at high altitudes (on airplanes) as well.
The highlighting is a great feature for remembering things you want to quote later...the notes feature is a little tedious though.
Overall, I love mine and think you made a great choice.

That's a new one for me, Danny. Thx.

Joshua, thx for the music tip. Didn't even know that!
Caleb, thx for the advice. Having people step on it is something I intend to avoid. :) Seriously, I've been wondering at how fragile it is. Appreciate your thoughts.

Absolutely love mine. I was initially anti-e-readers because of my love of books, but I'm sold. The convenience of buying and storing books is great, but what has really sold me (and surprised me) is that it is much easier to read than a regular book.

I am thinking of buying my daughter a kindle. She loves to read. I am thinking of getting the Kindle wi-fi only. Is the wi-fi for downloading only or do you need it for reading.
Posted by: Jeff | 12/18/2010 at 09:32 AM
Jeff, wifi only for downloading. If you aren't in a wifi area you can't download a book, but if it's downloaded already the wifi doesn't matter. I'm not that impulsive for reading, so I didn't need it. Plus, I mostly read at home, cafe's, public library, etc, and they all have wifi.
